Abstract

The style or manner of a principal in his capacity as a leader is crucial to the success of teacher performance improvement under his leadership. The purpose of this study was to obtain data on (1) democratic leadership style and leadership style of charismatic leadership in improving teacher performance, (2) factors influencing principal leadership style, and (3) the extent to which the leadership style of democratic and charismatic head schools in improving teacher performance. Through qualitative approach with descriptive method, data collection technique is done through interview and documentation study. This study shows that (1) principals apply a democratic and charismatic leadership style in improving teacher performance, (2) factors affecting the leadership style used by principals include, the characteristics of leaders, the characteristics of superiors, subordinate characteristics, task equirements, organizational climate and policies, and behaviors and expectations of partners, and (3) principals applying a democratic and charismatic leadership style give many positive things for improved teacher performance. It is suggested that the principal as often as possible apply a democratic and charismatic leadership style to continuously improve teachers' performance so that the desired goals can be achieved properly and maximally.
